As a firefighter in Pennsylvania, you may be eligible for what’s called the Deferred Retirement Option Plan, the DROP program. If you’re eligible for a DROP program, you will have the benefits of a retiree, but still be able to work. This status will be available only for a certain amount of time, depending on what your local department allows. During this DROP period, the monthly benefits will be deposited into an interest-bearing account for the individual, and it will be paid in a lump sum upon termination.
